JIC Venture Growth Investments (VGI) has invested in Power Spin Inc. (Power Spin), through its JIC Venture Growth Fund 2 (VGF2).

Power Spin is a startup from Tohoku University that was established in 2018 with the aim of accelerating the social implementation of Tohoku University's world-leading research results, such as spintronics semiconductor technology. In order to achieve carbon neutrality, increasing power consumption due to the progress of the information society (increasing amount of data handled) is becoming a major issue. Conventional semiconductor memory records information based on the presence or absence of electric charge on electrons, so data disappears when the power is turned off (volatility), requiring constant electricity and large standby power, whereas semiconductor memory utilizing spintronics recordsinformation based on the rotation of electrons. By utilizing the magnetic direction (spin) and the magnetic properties of electrons to retain data, the data remains even when the power is turned off (non-volatile), significantly saving unnecessary standby power. It is expected that this technology will lead to the creation of semiconductors that are faster and consume less power than conventional semiconductors.

The significance of this investment is that Power Spin will advance the social implementation of Tohoku University's cutting-edge spintronics technology and accelerate the practical application of Japan's innovative next-generation semiconductor technology.

This investment will help Power Spin further accelerate its business by strengthening human resource recruitment, etc., and help it become a global deep tech startup from Japan.
